What I read today July 6, 2020

Interesting evolution of the top largest companies in the world by market cap. The 1990s one in particular is mind-boggling, to think that 8/10 were Japanese companies. Some companies like Exxon have managed to hang in there for 5 decades, whilst others like Eastman Kodak, Lucent Technologies are historical footnotes.
I really like this picture as a simple way of defining a decade in trends. Given how this year has gone, it still seems to be that the only growth is coming from US tech companies, but 10 years from now I doubt that the list will look the same.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but this is definitely fishy.. Wigan Athletic sold to a HK investor who owned a gambling corporation, who then voluntarily put the club into administration, leading the league to penalise the club and put them in danger of relegation, when supposedly some large bets out in Asia that the club would be relegated.

Last week saw some of the largest criminal drug busts in Europe. Police secretly hacked the encrypted mobile service that dealers were using to coordinate their deals.
It’d be pretty cool if this comes to pass. I struggle to remember all the syntax of different programming languages, what if you could just describe what you wanted a program to do and AI/ machine learning programs could write it out for you?
